Teaching your own class, on anything you know
The program at the senior center needed someone to teach a four week course on canning, and somehow I said yes, having canned for fifty years and taught nobody. The panic lasted until I remembered the machine. Here is how a course gets built now. You tell the program what you know and who is coming. Four sessions, ninety minutes, twelve retirees, mixed experience, some hands on limitations, kitchen with one stove and a big sink. Then you ask for the structure first, session by session, what gets demonstrated, what gets done hands on, what gets sent home, and you argue with it, you have fifty years and it has patterns, and the argument is where the course becomes yours. Then the materials. The handouts, one page each, large print, with the steps numbered and the safety warnings where nobody can miss them. The shopping list per session, costed. The list of what students bring, jars, a towel, reading glasses. The machine drafts all of it in twenty minutes, and the drafts are 80 percent right, and the 20 percent you fix is where your knowledge lives, the detail about the lids, the trick with the tongs. The best question I asked was the one nobody thinks to ask. What are the three mistakes a beginner makes at this, and how does my handout prevent each one. That question made the course. Fourteen people finished, eleven are canning at home, two came back to teach the next round with me. Fifty years of knowledge, organized in a weekend, shared in a month. The machine carried the clipboard. I carried the fifty years.
