This is the one no technology fixes, and I want to be straight about that before I say what it helped with, because the difference matters. Selling the family home after fifty two years is grief wearing paperwork, and the machine did not grieve and could not. What it did was carry. The house had four decades of decisions inside it, and every one of them wanted making at once, and that simultaneity is what breaks people. The program took it one conversation at a time, at midnight, at five in the morning, whenever the wave came. The practical inventory, room by room, the same as any move. The paperwork of the sale itself, the disclosure forms explained in English, the offer compared against the offer, the closing documents read before the lawyer read them so my hour with her was spent on questions instead of comprehension. The letters I could not start, to the buyer, a young family, telling them which porch board pops and where the daffodils come up, which the machine drafted from my rambling and which I signed with a hand that shook a little. And on the last night, the thing I did not expect it could hold. I described the house, every room, every mark on the doorframe where the heights were penciled, and asked it to write the description as a keepsake for the children, and it wrote four paragraphs that the three of them now have framed. It is not warmth. It was never warmth. It is a steady presence at the exact hours when no human one is available, and for the loneliest paperwork of a life, that turned out to be something.
