Thirty one years behind a public library reference desk taught me one thing about new technology. People do not come to learn it. They come to survive it, and the surviving looks like learning from the outside. We did this with the fax machine, with email, with the first smartphones people brought in confused and slightly ashamed. AI is the newest arrival, and the pattern is holding. On a Tuesday morning I would get the same four questions. Is this email real. How do I make the picture bigger. Will this thing steal my bank account. And, said more quietly, my daughter says I should use the AI, how. The quiet one is the real question, and it deserves a better answer than a manual. It deserves ninety minutes, a patient person beside you, and one small win with your own actual life. That is why I help with these classes even in retirement. The library is the right room for this, the same room that taught a town to read, then to search, and now to ask a machine a decent question. If you have been waiting for a sign that it is your turn, this is it. Bring the thing you have been avoiding. The junk drawer of papers, the letter you need to write, the photos in the shoebox. Nobody in the class will be faster than you, and nobody will laugh. The shame was never yours to carry anyway. It belonged to the people who made the machines hard to start.
