Every family historian past fifty knows the particular silence of the courthouse at 4:55 on a Friday, with one more reel of microfilm unread. The new tools do not give you more hours at the archive. They give you something better, eyes that do not tire and a translator that works for free at midnight. The transcription is the miracle for me. Photograph a page of 1890s cursive, feed it to a chat program, and ask for a typed version, marked where a word is uncertain. What took my squinting an hour takes a minute, and it flags the gaps honestly instead of guessing silently. The translation is the second miracle. My husband's people wrote letters in a German script no living cousin reads. The program does, well enough that we found the town we had been looking for since 1998 in a paragraph about a churn. Now the discipline, because in this work discipline is everything. The machine is eager, and eager helpers invent. It will read a smudge as a name that fits the family and sounds right. Every fact goes into your tree with the document image attached, and when the page and the machine disagree, the page wins, always. Treat it like a bright unpaid intern with excellent handwriting and no judgment, check everything it hands you, and it will carry more of the load than any tool since the photocopier. The brick walls are not all going to fall. But more of them will, and faster, than in any decade of this hobby's history.
