For typed questions and answers, yes, and this changed recently. In August 2026 OpenAI removed the message limits on the free plan and made a quick, capable model called Luna the default for everyone who pays nothing. Before that, free users got cut off after about ten questions every few hours. Now the tap does not run dry for ordinary typing. So what does the twenty dollar Plus subscription still buy? The bigger brain, mainly. Paid subscribers get the flagship model for harder problems, longer documents, heavier image and voice use, and early features. Think of it as the difference between the standard sedan and the loaded trim. Most people reading this would be perfectly happy in the sedan. The same rough logic applies across the big four. Google Gemini has a free tier that covers everyday use, with a paid tier around twenty dollars for heavier work. Microsoft now bundles its Copilot into Microsoft 365 subscriptions, which run about ten to twenty dollars a month for the whole Office suite, AI included. Apple's version arrives with the free iOS 27 update this fall on recent iPhones. My advice for anyone over fifty testing the waters is to spend nothing for the first month. Use the free tier of one program daily. If you keep bumping into its limits, and only then, consider paying. Most people never do.
