I have produced the church bulletin for nine years, and I inherited a process involving scissors. The modern version has a quiet collaborator that none of the committee knows about, and I am ready to confess it here. The announcements come to me the way they always have, dictated by phone, scribbled on offering envelopes, arriving as ten word texts that assume context nobody has. My old method was rewriting them badly at eleven at night. The new method takes twenty minutes on Thursday. I paste the raw scraps into the chat program and give it the standing rules. Grammar fixed, dates and times bolded and double checked against the calendar I am pasting in, each item under 60 words, no exclamation points, the tone is warm and plain, and if information seems missing, list the questions to ask rather than inventing the answer. That last rule matters. The machine will happily invent a start time, so you must forbid it and make it flag the gaps instead. What returns is clean, consistent, and 90 percent right, and the 10 percent it flags sends me two texts instead of printing a wrong time for the third year running. The committee thinks I have become efficient. I have become a good delegator, which at our age is the same thing. The same routine runs the garden club newsletter and the VFW post announcements, and the machine never tires of the second Thursday of the month.
