The art teacher at the senior center retired, the class died, and the watercolors went in the closet, and that is where they stayed until my daughter asked, point blank, what I was saving them for. The honest answer was instruction. I can follow a YouTube video, but the video cannot see my painting, and the gap between the screen and my page was where my confidence leaked out. The chat programs close that gap in the most obvious way and almost nobody our age has tried it. You photograph your own work and ask for the critique. I painted the barn from the photograph, I said, attached both, and asked, what is working, what is the one thing to fix next, be specific, be encouraging, and treat me as a beginner with a good eye. The critique that came back was better than patient. It noticed the perspective error in the roofline, exactly where my unease had been, prescribed one exercise, and had me paint the same barn three more times across two weeks, each iteration with its own critique. A course built itself around my exact weaknesses, which is the thing no book and no video has ever done. Six months in, the barn hangs in the kitchen, and the closet is empty again in the good direction. The machine does not have taste, and it says so if you ask. What it has is eyes on your work, any hour, for nothing, and the patience to teach the same roofline forty times. That was the missing teacher, it turns out, or near enough.
