Writing to your congressman, effectively

I wrote letters to elected officials for forty years and assumed they vanished into a wall. Then I staffed a summer internship in a congressional district office, too old to be an intern, volunteer is the honest word, and I learned how the mail actually works, and the difference between a letter that counts and a letter that glances off. The letters that count are short, specific, and personal. One issue. One clear ask. One paragraph of your own story connected to it. The machine, used correctly, gets you there. You give it the situation. I am a retired teacher in the district, the issue is the Medicare negotiation bill, I support it because of what insulin costs my husband, and I want 150 words, respectful, no form letter language, addressed to the office correctly. What comes back is a draft with structure, and your job, the part only you can do, is to make sure the story paragraph is entirely true and entirely yours, because the staff in that office reads a thousand letters and the form letter smell is instantly recognizable. The machine also tells you the current status of the bill, which committee it sits in, and whether your person is on that committee, which changes the letter's usefulness entirely, and it maintains the honest limits, always confirm the bill number and status on the official sites, congress moves faster than its training. Twenty letters a year now, each one sharp, each one counted in the weekly tally that gets reported. The wall was never a wall. It was a mailroom, and it rewards letters written well.
