The letter from the homeowners association arrived with words like non compliant and hearing date, about a fence that had stood for nineteen years, and my first reaction, the reaction they count on, was to feel guilty and start digging post holes. The second reaction, newer and better, was to paste the letter, our deed, and the HOA's own published rules into the chat program and ask what is actually being claimed and what does the evidence support. The analysis came back in an hour, organized. The cited rule postdated the fence by six years. The rules themselves had a grandfathering clause the letter did not mention. And the state, it turned out, had passed a law about precisely this kind of after the fact enforcement that the HOA's letter had not accounted for. None of this was legal advice, the machine said so, and the letter it drafted for me was firm, polite, and built like a filing cabinet, each fact numbered, each document referenced, no adjectives. The association's lawyer read it and the hearing became a conversation, and the conversation became the fence staying, with a coat of stain as a gesture. The cautions matter and I kept every one. For anything with real money or a courthouse in its future, a human lawyer reads the strategy. The document gathering stayed mine, that shoebox of closing papers was gold and only I had it. What the machine did was refuse to be intimidated on my behalf, organize the papers into an argument, and translate the threatening language into the ordinary dispute it actually was. Nineteen year fences deserve that much.
