There is a kind of writing in this world whose purpose is not communication. It is endurance. The apartment lease. The nursing home agreement. The warranty. The credit card's forty page amendment that arrives in February like a bill for snow. I used to sign these after reading the first page and the dollar amounts, like everyone, and hope. I do not do that anymore, and the reason fits in a pocket. The method is to photograph or paste the entire document into the chat program and ask three questions. What does this say, in plain English, section by section. What are the five clauses that most favor the company over me. And what should I ask before signing. The nursing home agreement for my sister was where this earned its keep forever. In plain English, the machine found the arbitration clause, explained in two sentences what signing away a jury trial actually means, flagged the clause letting them raise rates with 30 days notice, and drafted four questions for the administrator, respectful and specific, that changed the answers we got at the meeting. The lawyer still looked at the final version, and I tell everyone the same thing, for the binding decisions, a human lawyer reads what matters. But between the human readings, for the hundred documents a year that no lawyer has time for and no normal person can parse, the machine is the translator the other side prays you never hire.
