The best AI story I know is not about intelligence at all. It is about the neighbor two doors down, 84, macular degeneration, who has not read a book in three years and has started again. Her granddaughter set up the chat program on her phone and tablet, and now the routine is this. She holds the camera over a page, any page, and says, read me this page. It reads aloud in a clear voice, at whatever speed she asks, and it holds her place. The library newsletter, the church bulletin, the card from her sister in Ohio with the handwriting that got small. For a generation that grew up reading everything ourselves, losing the reading is a particular cruelty, and having it read back, on demand, in a patient voice, with no one needed in the room, is a return of dignity disguised as a gadget feature. The same programs serve the other senses. Live captions on a phone conversation, so the grandchild's fast mumbling becomes text on the screen. Description of photographs, aloud, for the friend whose eyes no longer manage, so the wedding pictures get narrated instead of skipped. Translation, read aloud, for my Portuguese speaking neighbor at the clinic. None of this is science fiction, it is all in the free tiers, right now, and it is the single most underused set of buttons in the whole technology. If you love someone who has stopped reading or hearing the world fully, this is the thing to bring them. It gave my neighbor her sister's handwriting back. That is worth more than any feature list.
