The talking calculator that explains itself

I was a bank teller for thirty one years, so numbers do not frighten me, but I watched them frighten plenty of smart people, usually around some letter from the government with a table in it. The single most underrated use of these chat programs, for people our age, is as a calculator that shows its work in English. Take the Social Security letter. Photograph the table, paste it in, and ask, explain what happens if I claim at 64 instead of 67, in dollars per month, and what the break even age is. It walks through the arithmetic, states its assumptions, and lets you argue with the assumptions, which is the part no pamphlet does. Same with the Medicare letter and its alphabet soup of parts and plans. Same with the reverse mortgage advertisement that arrives with the official looking envelope. Feed it in, ask for the catch, and read what comes back before signing anything. The rules I keep are strict because money is where the machine's confident mistakes cost the most. It never logs into anything for me. It never knows account numbers, only the shapes of questions. Any answer that matters gets checked against the source, the agency's own site, the actual statement, a human at the bank window on a slow Tuesday. And anything involving taxes beyond simple questions goes to the preparer, informed by the machine's first pass so my hour with her is cheaper. Used that way, it is the best math tutor the kitchen table has ever had. Patient, legible, and it never makes you feel like the slow one in the class.
