I found out about my ADHD at 62, and the first feeling was grief for the forty years of dropped keys, lost letters, and lists written on receipts that evaporated. The second feeling, arriving about a week later, was practical. What helps now. The chat programs turned out to fit this brain better than anything I have tried, and I have tried filing cabinets, alarms, three planner systems, and shame. Here is why it fits. ADHD memory fails at capture, not at caring. The thought you had in the car is gone by the driveway. Now I talk at my phone for ninety seconds, wherever I am, a jumble of reminders, half ideas, the thing I promised my sister. In the evening I ask the program to sort the jumble into today, this week, and waiting on someone else, and in the morning the list is still there, in one place, on one screen. The remembering is outsourced. The caring stays mine. The machine also body doubles, which is a real technique. I tell it I am about to tackle the drawer I have avoided since 2019, and it asks how it went afterward, and saying it out loud to something that will not judge is weirdly effective. The cautions are real. It will organize anything, including things that do not deserve organizing, so I still decide what matters today. And it is a tool, not treatment. But for the daily mechanics of a brain that drops things in rooms it just left, it is the first machine that bends toward me instead of the other way around.
