Old photographs, new tricks
The shoebox on the top shelf. Everyone our age has one, and the reason it is still a shoebox is that doing anything with two hundred old photographs sounded like a winter's work. The new photo tools change the arithmetic. Three things are now ordinary. First, restoration. Tools can improve the appearance of torn corners, water stains, and fading, but results vary. Some apps offer free versions with limits; other features require payment. Second, colorization for black and white prints, which is more moving than I expected the first time I saw my mother's 1948 picnic in color. Third, and quietly the most useful, description. Show the program a photo and ask what is in it, and it tells you, which sounds like a parlor trick until you have four hundred unsorted pictures, or a friend whose eyes no longer do the job and wants the picture described aloud. The discipline that keeps this honest is from the museum world. Keep the original scan untouched, forever. Label anything the machine fixed as fixed, and anything it colorized as colorized, because your grandmother's kitchen was not that shade of teal and a future grandchild deserves to know that. AI added color and detail is a guess, sometimes a beautiful one, but a guess. Used with that rule, the shoebox stops being a guilt object and becomes an afternoon, and the faces come down off the shelf and back into the room.

The Tivoli Free Library was originally established in 1893 as the Tivoli Public Library. In 1919 the Library reorganized and received its provisional charter from the New York State Education Department as an association library. The Tivoli Free Library is registered with the NYS Education Department as serving the Village of Tivoli and the Town of Red Hook, and is a member of the Mid-Hudson Library System. The Library is located on the first floor in the historic Watts de Peyster Firemen’s Hall in the Village of Tivoli.
