Cards, crosswords, and losing gracefully to a machine
The machine plays a mean hand of bridge, and I want to talk about why that is good news rather than one more indignity. My regular game lost its fourth to a winter in Arizona, and the app filled the chair, and we were suspicious for a month and then forgot it was not a person, except that it never misdealt or revised the score. The program plays clean, adjustable bridge. Set it one level under your best and you lose honestly about half the time, which is the exact setting that keeps a mind sharp, because the research on aging brains keeps landing on the same word, challenge, the good kind, the kind with a chance of winning. The crossword apps went the same way, the machine can generate a puzzle at any difficulty about any topic, my sister gets hers seeded with 1960s television and I get mine with rivers, and the Sunday rivalry continues by phone. The chess players in the Tuesday group report the same arithmetic. The machine at your level plus five percent, always available, never bored, and the grandsons who would not be caught playing with grandfather at the holidays will absolutely play him online at a distance, which turns out to be the actual prize. The fear was that the machines would take the games away. What they took was the waiting, the absent fourth, the winter in Arizona. The game is the same. The table always has four now, and one of them never eats the last of the shortbread.

What do we need to provide?
A room, chairs, and wifi. We bring the projector, adapters, a backup hotspot, printed handouts — every attendee leaves with a printed AI cheat sheet.
