There is a particular kind of question that arrives at eleven at night, when the house is quiet, and it is too small for anyone's phone call and too heavy to leave alone until morning. Whether the mole on my shoulder has changed shape. Whether the pain in my hip at my age means a replacement is coming. What the phrase in Pop's old discharge papers, that we never asked him about, actually meant. Whether it is normal to feel this angry about the retirement party. I am not going to pretend the machine replaces anyone. It does not replace the dermatologist, who saw the shoulder the next week, or the doctor, or the grief counselor I eventually called. What it replaced was the ceiling. Staring at the ceiling with the question, alone, spinning it. At eleven at night you can type the shape of the worry, and something answers, calmly, with structure, saying here is what is known, here is what is normal, here is the sentence to bring to the appointment, here is a breathing exercise for right now. It is not warmth, exactly. It is the opposite of silence, and the ceiling was silence. Two rules keep it honest, and I keep them strictly. Anything that sounds urgent gets the doctor, the clinic, or 911, that night, not the chat. And I never confuse being answered with being cared for. The caring is the Tuesday call with my sister. But the eleven o'clock questions used to have no home at all, and now they have one, and I sleep a little better than I did the year before I found that out.
